How to Sign up for a Credit Card

Obtaining a credit card can be a useful and helpful tool in your financial plan. Credit cards can help you build and establish credit, and they can be an asset to you in terms of rewards and benefits programs such as travel rewards, frequent flyer miles, and cash back rewards. Of course, they can also be a gateway to overspending and bad debt. Think responsibly and set up a plan of action for how and when you will take care of credit card expenses, as a prelude to any of the following steps.

First, before you fill out any paperwork, do some legwork. Research the available cards and make a list of the things you are looking for in a card. Compare interest rates, fees, and rewards programs. Settle on which card or cards will be the best fit for you. Don't forget to consider your bank as an option as well. Many banks offer great credit programs with low rates.

Second, before you sign up for a credit card, call the credit card companies you are considering and ask if they have any specific requirements for acceptance. If you have poor or no credit, and the card you have chosen requires a good to excellent credit score, you are not going to be approved. Don't waste your time applying.

Third, fill out the application. Signing up for a credit card online is the fastest and easiest way to sign up for a credit card. But be sure you double check that the website you are on is secure. A secure website will have a picture of a padlock on the far left hand side of the address bar at the top of the page. Do not ever enter any personal information on an unsecured webpage. If you choose not to apply electronically, you can fill out a paper application and mail it in, or call and apply over the phone. Whichever option you choose, be sure to fill out all portions of the application fully. You could be denied simply because you forgot to fill out your complete address. Credit card companies have neither the time nor the resources to contact you and let you know you left a field blank.

Lastly, if you are approved, your card should arrive in the mail in a few weeks. When it arrives be sure to read over the terms and conditions carefully. Call your credit card company for clarification if you have any questions. The more you understand your credit card, the better able you will be to use it to your financial advantage.
