Key features of GO2bank

  • Early direct deposit: Receive your paycheck up to two days early or government benefits up to four days early with direct deposit.

  • High-yield savings: Earn a 4.50% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) on your savings, though this high rate only applies to balances up to $5,000.

  • Secured credit card: Build credit with the GO2bank Secured Visa Credit Card. It has no annual fee and doesn't require a credit check, but does require setting up a qualifying direct deposit to apply.

  • Overdraft protection: With eligible direct deposits, you can opt-in for overdraft protection, covering purchases up to $200. There's a $15 fee for each eligible transaction that brings your account negative if the balance isn't brought back to at least $0 within 24 hours.

  • No monthly fee (with conditions): The $5 monthly fee is waived if you receive a qualifying direct deposit.

  • Widespread ATM access: Use the Allpoint ATM network of over 55,000 locations for free cash withdrawals. Out-of-network ATMs will incur a $3 fee.

  • FDIC-insured: As a brand of Green Dot Bank, GO2bank accounts are FDIC-insured up to $250,000.

GO2bank Sign Up and Create Account

It's a bit more involved than "just sign up and create an account" to fully utilize GO2bank's benefits, especially for things like the secured credit card or avoiding fees.

Here's a breakdown of the typical process and what's required:

1. Sign Up and Create an Account:

    1. You'll likely start by downloading the GO2bank app or visiting their website.
    2. You'll need to provide personal information such as your name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number, as required by law for opening a bank account (even online ones).
    3. GO2bank will verify your identity.

2. Fund Your Account:

    1. Once your account is created, you'll need to deposit money. You can do this via direct deposit (recommended for benefits), linking an external bank account, mobile check deposit, or depositing cash at a retail location (which may have a fee).

3. To Waive the Monthly Fee:

    1. To avoid the $5 monthly maintenance fee, you must set up a qualifying direct deposit (e.g., from your employer or government benefits). If you don't receive a direct deposit in the previous monthly statement period, the fee will be charged.

4. To Apply for the Secured Credit Card:

    1. While the secured credit card has no credit check, it does require setting up a qualifying direct deposit into your GO2bank account to be eligible to apply.
    2. Once eligible, you'll need to provide a security deposit for the card, which will typically be your credit limit.

5. Accessing Other Features:

    1. Features like the high-yield savings account and overdraft protection may require additional setup or meeting specific criteria (e.g., eligible direct deposits for overdraft protection).

So, while the initial signup is quick, getting the most out of GO2bank and avoiding fees relies heavily on setting up and maintaining direct deposits.

Do you get an actual Visa debit card?

Yes, when you open a GO2bank account, you receive a physical Visa debit card. The card can be obtained in one of two ways:

  • Mail: You can open an account online and a personalized, chip-enabled Visa debit card will be sent to you in the mail.

  • In-store: For immediate use, you can purchase a temporary GO2bank Visa debit card at a retailer like 7-Eleven, Kroger, or Walgreens. This card can be activated and used right away until your permanent, personalized card arrives in the mail.

Temporary virtual card

GO2bank also gives you a virtual debit card within the mobile app that you can use immediately after opening your account online. This virtual card allows you to make online purchases and set up recurring payments until your physical card arrives.

Once you receive and activate your physical card, the temporary virtual card will deactivate. The card number on your virtual and physical card will be the same, but the expiration date and CVV code will be different.

FICO® Credit Scores

A FICO® Score is a proprietary credit score created by the Fair Isaac Corporation (FICO). About 90% of top U.S. lenders use it to make lending decisions.

FICO® Score Ranges:

  • Exceptional: 800–850
  • Very Good: 740–799
  • Good: 670–739
  • Fair: 580–669
  • Poor: 300–579

FICO categorizes scores as Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Exceptional.

What is a Credit Score?

A credit score is a three-digit number (300–850) predicting your creditworthiness. Lenders use it to evaluate risk and determine rates and terms for credit.

Why it matters: A higher score can help you qualify for loans and lower interest rates. A lower score can lead to higher borrowing costs or application denials.

FICO® Credit Score Facts

Key Characteristics:
  • Three-Digit Number: Summarizes your credit risk.
  • Range: 300–850; higher scores = lower risk.
  • Data Source: Uses your credit reports from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.
  • Industry Standard: Lenders rely on FICO for mortgages, auto loans, and credit cards.

Note: Credit scores reflect your creditworthiness but do not guarantee approval for any credit product.
