How Do I Get 4% Cash Back From the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi?

To get 4% cash back with the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, use the card for eligible gas and electric vehicle (EV) charging purchases outside of Costco. The 4% rate applies to the first $7,000 in combined eligible gas and EV charging purchases each year. If you buy gas at Costco, the rate is even higher: 5% cash back.

Where Should I Use the Card to Get 4%?

The easiest way to earn the 4% rate is to use the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi at an eligible gas station outside Costco or at an eligible EV charging location.

You do not have to purchase gas at Costco to earn a strong gas reward. Costco purchases receive 5%, while other eligible gas purchases can receive 4%.

Why Didn't I Get 4% at My Gas Station?

If you used the card at a gas station and received only 1%, the location may not have qualified for the 4% category. Citi excludes certain purchases at superstores, supermarkets, convenience stores and warehouse clubs other than Costco.

That means the name of the business or the fact that it sells gasoline does not necessarily determine the reward you receive. The way the merchant transaction is categorized can matter.

If this has happened to you, see our more detailed explanation of why you don't get 4% cash back at all gas stations with the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi.

Can I Get More Than 4% on Gas?

Yes. If you purchase eligible gasoline at Costco, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi earns 5% cash back instead of 4%.

So if Costco gas is convenient for you, that is the best gas-rewards rate offered by the card.

Can I Earn 4% on EV Charging?

Yes. Eligible EV charging purchases are also included in the card's 4% gas and EV charging category.

How Long Does the 4% Rate Last?

The 4% rate applies to the first $7,000 in combined eligible gas and EV charging purchases each year. After that amount is reached, additional purchases in the category earn 1% cash back.

For a broader explanation of the card's rewards and how the different cash back categories work, see our Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi benefits and features guide.

FICO® Credit Scores

A FICO® Score is a proprietary credit score created by the Fair Isaac Corporation (FICO). About 90% of top U.S. lenders use it to make lending decisions.

FICO® Score Ranges:

  • Exceptional: 800–850
  • Very Good: 740–799
  • Good: 670–739
  • Fair: 580–669
  • Poor: 300–579

FICO categorizes scores as Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Exceptional.

What is a Credit Score?

A credit score is a three-digit number (300–850) predicting your creditworthiness. Lenders use it to evaluate risk and determine rates and terms for credit.

Why it matters: A higher score can help you qualify for loans and lower interest rates. A lower score can lead to higher borrowing costs or application denials.
