Why Was My Costco Credit Card Application Denied?

If your application for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi was denied, there are several possible reasons. Citi considers factors such as your credit score, credit history, payment history, income, credit utilization and recent credit applications when reviewing an application. The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi also requires an active Costco membership, and having excellent credit alone does not guarantee approval.

Why Was My Costco Credit Card Application Denied?

There is not necessarily one specific reason why Citi denied your application for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi. Citi looks at your overall creditworthiness rather than relying on one credit score or one approval requirement.

Your credit history, payment history, credit utilization, income and recent applications can all affect how Citi evaluates your application. You must also have an active Costco membership to qualify for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi.

Could My Credit Score Have Caused the Denial?

Yes. Citi says that a higher credit score may improve your chances of approval for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi. However, Citi does not publish a specific minimum credit score that guarantees approval.

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is generally one of the more difficult Citi cards to qualify for. For a closer look at the card's approval requirements and how it compares with other Citi cards, see our article on what is the most difficult Citi card to get.

Can High Credit Card Balances Cause a Denial?

They can. Credit utilization is one of the factors Citi may consider when reviewing an application for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi. If you are using a large percentage of your available revolving credit, it can affect your overall credit profile.

Can Too Many Recent Credit Card Applications Cause a Denial?

Yes. Recent credit applications may be considered by Citi when reviewing your eligibility for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi. Applying for several credit cards within a relatively short period can make your credit profile look different from that of someone who has not recently sought additional credit.

Citi also has application policies that can affect whether you are eligible for certain cards based on your recent Citi application and account history. If you have recently applied for several Citi cards or already have Citi credit cards, see our guide to understanding Citi's 8/65 Rule and 48-Month Rule for card applications.

Can Income or Debt Affect Approval?

Yes. Citi may consider your income and overall financial situation when reviewing an application for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi. Your existing debt and other financial obligations can also be relevant to the credit decision.

Does Costco Membership Guarantee Approval?

No. You must have an active Costco membership to apply for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, but membership does not guarantee that Citi will approve your application.

Citi still evaluates your credit application and makes the final approval decision based on your overall creditworthiness.

What Should I Do If Citi Denied My Application?

The first thing to do is find out why Citi denied the application. The adverse action notice you receive from Citi should provide the reason or reasons for the decision.

Once you know what caused the denial, you can decide whether it makes sense to address that issue before applying again. You can also try contacting Citi to ask whether the decision can be reconsidered. See our guide to calling the Citi reconsideration line for information about this option.

If the denial was related to high credit utilization, for example, reducing your balances may improve your credit profile. If the denial was related to inaccurate information on your credit report, correcting the information may be appropriate.

Should I Apply Again After Being Denied?

Not necessarily right away. Applying again without addressing the reason for the denial may simply result in another denial. It can make more sense to review the reason Citi provided and determine whether your credit profile has changed before submitting another application for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi.

Can I Check for Costco Credit Card Prequalification Before Applying?

Yes. Citi currently allows prospective applicants to check whether they may be pre-qualified for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi before submitting the formal application. The prequalification check does not impact your credit score.

If Citi gives you a pre-qualified offer, you can then decide whether you want to continue with the formal application. Prequalification is not a guarantee of approval, but it allows you to check for an offer before deciding whether to submit the application.

See our Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi prequalification guide for more information about how the process works.

FICO® Credit Scores

A FICO® Score is a proprietary credit score created by the Fair Isaac Corporation (FICO). About 90% of top U.S. lenders use it to make lending decisions.

FICO® Score Ranges:

  • Exceptional: 800–850
  • Very Good: 740–799
  • Good: 670–739
  • Fair: 580–669
  • Poor: 300–579

FICO categorizes scores as Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Exceptional.

What is a Credit Score?

A credit score is a three-digit number (300–850) predicting your creditworthiness. Lenders use it to evaluate risk and determine rates and terms for credit.

Why it matters: A higher score can help you qualify for loans and lower interest rates. A lower score can lead to higher borrowing costs or application denials.
